ODENSE: A birthday bash in Odense turned out to be the right morale-booster for seasoned campaigner Lin Dan (pic) of China.
The two-time Olympic champion stood tall in a day when all his illustrious teammates fell like kingpins in the Danisa Denmark Open.
Lin Dan, whose 35th birthday was celebrated over dinner by his teammates on Oct 14 here, defeated Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand 21-13, 14-21, 21-7 on Tuesday (Oct 16) to set up a second round match against K. Srikanth of India.
Earlier, Angus Ng Ka Long dumped fifth seed and 2016 Olympic champion Chen Long 22-20, 21-15, while India's Sameer Verma was jumping for joy after knocking out reigning All-England champion Shi Yuqi.
Reigning world champion Kento Momota of Japan knocked out Anthony Ginting of Indonesia 21-18, 21-23, 21-15 in a thrilling opening match on Tuesday (Oct 16).
The top half of the men's singles, which include top seed Viktor Axelsen and Malaysia's Liew Daren, will be played on Wednesday (Oct 17).
Daren faces Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan, while Axelsen will square off against Kazumasa Sakai of Japan.
